The Calais de Dragon

Calais is home to one of the most unique and impressive attractions – a giant dragon crafted from steel and sculpted wood. This colossal creature stretches 25 meters in length, stands 12 meters tall, and spans 5 to 17.5 meters in width, weighing a staggering 72 tons. Known for being one of the top things to do in Calais, the dragon moves along the coast at 2.48 mph (4 km/h) and can breathe fire, smoke, and even spit water.

Its incredible expressiveness is highlighted by its animated eyes, eyelids, and ears, while its agility is displayed through 280 coordinated movements controlled by 4 to 6 machinist pilots. The first place to head to is the Town Hall which boasts a 75 metre belfry and has been named as a World Heritage Monument by UNESCO. History fans will love Saint-Omer as it is filled with historic buildings, impressive architecture, and a stunning Gothic cathedral. Located just a 40 minute drive from Calais, Saint-Omer is one of the best places to visit as it offers lots of different things to do in the Calais area. With its fascinating yellow brick buildings, a rich ceramic and textile heritage, and plenty of excellent dining options including lots of delicious fresh fish, there is nothing you won’t enjoy.
